Tarkos Training
This film by César Vayssié is a direct, abrupt, and powerful testimony to the training for the project “Bocal” (2003–2004), launched by Boris Charmatz.
This film by César Vayssié is a direct, abrupt, and powerful testimony to the training for the project “Bocal” (2003–2004), launched by Boris Charmatz. “Bocal” is a nomadic and temporary school spread over several months and bringing together some fifteen students with various backgrounds. This project concentrates on the modalities of learning by the dancers and aims to situate artistic practice at the very heart of the pedagogic act. The work, published under the title Je suis une école (I am a school/I follow a school), synthesizes the experiments performed by the “bocalists” over that period. The working sessions have been developed in different European cities, but the training filmed by César Vayssié took place on the slopes of Semnoz, in Haute-Savoie. Shot in the snow, the dancers are seen working with Christophe Tarkos’s text, “Hauteur” (in: Oui, Editions Al Dante, 1996). The physical engagement is intense, and the shots, thanks to the proximity of the bodies, create a sense of living experience. The states of body developed, the energy of the reading, and the interactions between Tarkos’s words and the physical forces involved, produce a poignant interpretation of togetherness. Although the whole version is shown here, it is in small format, and should be viewed for research purposes only.
