Jean Weidt - Physical encounters
The forgotten “red” dancer Jean Weidt was driven by communist beliefs and obsessed with dance. “Physical encounters” accesses the quality of movement and plasticity of Weidt’s material and removes the didactic action from this embodiment.
The forgotten “red” dancer Jean Weidt (1904-1988) was driven by communist beliefs and obsessed with dance. In the center of his choreographic work was the unequivocal representation of political content on the basis of exemplary narratives. “Physical encounters” accesses the quality of movement and plasticity of Weidt’s material and removes the didactic action from this embodiment. By ablating the ideological layers and transferring the masculine and at the same time sensual movement material onto three female bodies the from today’s perspective resistive components of the work Jean Weidt become visible: a subtle network of physical self-assertion of masculine strength and sensuality.
