Roméo et Juliette

Choreographer Joëlle BouvierDance performance Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève
In “Roméo et Juliette” (Romeo and Juliet), choreographed on the extracts of Serge Prokofiev’s three suites for orchestra, Joëlle Bouvier wished to go back to the world of the fable, to evacuate a specific era and costumes that held too many connotations and preferred to focus her research on the heart of the drama. This creation invites to an encounter with the dancers of the Ballet of the Grand Theatre of Geneva. “Together, we let our bodies be enveloped by the gentleness and the fury of this music, we took our inspiration from its rhythm, its taste and its poetry to write the gestures, the portés, the momentums, the breaks that would speak, recount the passionate adventure of two lovers” (Joëlle Bouvier).

GENTLE AND FURIOUS
Romeo and Juliet, the story of love smothered by hate. Love destroyed by the blind violence of two enemy clans, ruthless rivals with no other reason for their bloody feud than that they belong to two distinct families.
How many wars in the world today echo Shakespeare’s tragedy?
That’s why I chose not to set my story in a specific era. The set design and costumes are timeless, because this story is happening, has happened and will happen again, everywhere. Nor did I want to follow the plot of Shakespeare’s play in every detail, but to concentrate the story of the lovers of Verona on its essential framework and its fundamental situations – five distinct characters are enough to stage it, while the whole company gives this tragic family story its collective dimension.
Our creation is the result of several encounters. First, there was Prokofiev’s intense and beautiful music. We also met the dancers of the Geneva Ballet. Together, we slipped our bodies into the sweetness or fury of this music, letting ourselves be inspired by its rhythm, its flavour and its poetry to write the gestures, the lifts, the surges, the breaks that will tell the story of the passionate adventure of two lovers.
At the time of writing this text, we are still in the midst of creation, searching, building, doubting, moving forward to meet this ballet which, I hope, will seduce and move as if it were the first time.
