Olivier Meyer, the director of the Théâtre Jean Vilar in Suresnes, invited for a period of three months (two months of rehearsals and one month of triumphal performances) five choreographers for five creations around hip hop. Interviews, moments of work and of shows trace these encounters where everyone found something to enrich their own creative work.
After having auditioned more than two hundred young people, the choreographers Blanca Li, Régis Obadia, Farid Berki, Laura Scozzi and Karine Saporta made up their teams. They drew on this living material represented by hip hop expression and closely mixed it with their poetry and dramaturgy. “We take the codes, we turn them round, we transform them”, says Farid Berki. “We have created a show like a dress cut just to fit them” continues Bianca Li. And Karine Saporta confirms, smiling “I’ve the impression I’ve always danced hip hop!” While the dancers sometimes had problems confronting their energy with a precise gestural technique, set to a music and in the scenic space, everyone seems delighted with the experience: “She has preserved our authenticity” one dancer says.
