James Carlès is a choreographer, researcher and lecturer. He received his initial training in the dances and music of Africa and its Diaspora and then trained with the great names in modern dance, mainly in New York and London. Since 1992, he has pursued an artistic and analytical approach that explores the ‘junctions’ between the dances, rhythms and philosophies of Africa and its Diaspora and Western techniques and frameworks of thought. To date, his company’s repertoire includes over fifty works by himself and authors such as Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Talley Beatty, Asadata Dafora, Géraldine Armstrong, Rick Odums, Wayne Barbaste, Carolyn Carlson and Robyn Orlin.

A solo dancer and outstanding performer, James Carlès has been a performer and artistic collaborator not only for numerous musical ensembles ranging from Baroque to jazz and contemporary music, but also for choreographers such as Carolyn Carlson, Robyn Orlin, Rui Horta and Myriam Naisy.

Associate artist at Astrada-Jazz In Marciac from 2012 to 2014, and associate researcher at the LLA Créatis laboratory at Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University, James Carlès is particularly involved in heritage projects to promote diversity and disseminate choreographic culture.
He is also the creator and artistic director of the ‘Danses et Continents Noirs’ festival.
