Scandal Point
Scandal Point (1996) is a choreographic piece by François Raffinot for 8 dancers.
For this piece, François Raffinot used the voice of the writer Salman Rushdie. He commented on this: “Today, some living voices have no body. There are words that endanger lives. Each time, this writing, extremely physical, ends up by placing your own body in danger as though such an investment in writing were to irrevocably lead to exposing the body at risk and oblige it to seek shelter. Irrespective of such topical issues, these voices possess a genuine, unparalleled light with which I have always wanted to dazzle dances. Those that I stage in Scandal Point have nothing to do with the culture or even the words of these voices. The dances only seek to show what they are able to say about life, while striving to keep up the incredible energy that these words spend”.
The piece was created for the 50th edition of the Avignon Festival, on July 9th, 1996. It was co-produced by the Théâtre du Volcan, Le Havre, and the Arsenal de Metz, with the help of the Région Haute-Normandie, Le Havre city council, and the dance delegation of the Ministry of Culture, with the support of Hermès. The piece enjoyed a resounding success in France and overseas, particularly in Denmark.
