Regreso a casa

Returning Home

A dreamlike short film that travels through the psyche of its protagonist, Ausente, who decides to detach himself from the daily life of his postal office to travel through his psyche and dialogue with the memories evoked by the aroma of a coffee.

Note from Blas Payri, EIVV programmer

This work was selected for its general interest and good audiovisual production, and in particular for the movement montage in the central section, where the dancer’s movement is broken down and reassembled with tight and wide shots, creating a dynamic that goes beyond the simple recording of the dance.

Director Statement

In this project the Home (Casa) will be used as a poetic symbol, inspired by the French poet and philosopher Gaston Bachelard and his work “The Poetics of Space”. We explore the home and intimate space through the lens of ruin and exile; ideas guided by experience and the prose of Joseph Brodsky.

We are interested in creating a dialogue between the character, Absent, and his environment with elements and sensations that are universal. In a way they are reflective of our latitude, we can look at the poetry of Eugenio Montejo, a Venezuelan writer whose words perfectly describe the collective imagination of the country, with a universal sensation of return, of home, which lead us to its ” immeasurable geographies.”

In the story, the use of verbal expression is replaced by other equally profound and determining typical languages of memory, nostalgia, and recollection. We explore the ways in which we can dialogue and interact with these non-verbal expressions within our imagination. In this way, the narrative is based on a detailed treatment of sound design, composed especially for the piece, which accompanies the choreographic movements created by the dancer Brian Landaeta, who plays the character Ausente.

The original idea, its art direction and general direction, were developed by Angélica Burgos Colls, focusing, among other elements, on the transformation of the space. Indira Monzón Veitía is participating as a set-builder and Oriana Abello as a prop-maker, both collaborating in the intervention of the space. Brian Landeata is our dancer and protagonist. Aguasanta Rojas works as an assistant throughout the creative and directing process.

Camilo Paparoni will be our director of photography, Stefania Chehade and Samuel Dario will participate in the post-production process.
