“La Belle”, a ballet by Jean-Christophe Maillot created for Etoile Bernice Coppieters in 2001, returns on stage with Olga Smirnova, Star of the Bolshoi, guest in the title role. Victoria Ananyan, dancer with the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, will also play this role in a second cast. To become another Belle, she must discover ballet in her own way, in her flesh and in her thoughts.
With Victoria Ananyan: Dancer of the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo in the title role of “La Belle”
Bernice Coppieters: Principal Ballet Master

Jean-Christophe Maillot’s production, La Belle, obtained the Nijinsky award for the best choreographic production 2001 during the second edition of the Monaco Dance Forum in December 2002, and the Danza & Danza Prize for the Best show 2002, awarded by the Italian critics.

« In order to retain the expurgated Walt Disney version of The Sleeping Beauty (itself greatly influenced by Petipa’s ballet), the forcefully carnal character of Perrault’s tale has been largely eradicated. The tale of this young girl is in fact one of the flesh, and the author makes no mystery of it. One need only read the moral of the story to convince oneself. But the collective cultural unconscious has entirely eclipsed this aspect, as it has eclipsed everything about the story that raises the complexities and neuroses of the tale’s family relationships.

It is through these two prisms, original to the genesis of the story, that one should view Jean- Christophe Maillot’s rereading of Tchaikovsky’s score and of the ballet ».
