The group
The Association Ardence is based in Tournan-en-Brie (Seine-et-Marne) and was founded in 2017. It is made up of 9 dancers, most of whom have known each other and have been dancing together for twenty years. Its diversity is a source of inspiration for the original works of Nadine Meyer, the dance teacher and choreographer behind the association. Some of these works attracted attention at the French dance federation’s national choreographic events, particularly in 2011, 2012 and 2015. Eager to be in front of an audience, the group has participated in several festivals, shows and events, including the 48h du sel festival in Sèvres, and the International festival of street theatre in Aurillac. Curious and keen for new experiences, these dancers improvise, perform with live musicians and dance outdoors. This is their first entry into the Amateur Dance and Repertoire programme.
The project
The group first met Italian choreographer Ezio Schiavulli in 2009, during a three year regional residency (organised by the department of Seine-et-Marne and three partner cities) at the Couperin conservatory in Tournan-en-Brie. At this time, they saw performances of three works by Schiavulli at various places around the city. The piece they have chosen, Nête jinte o pecciöne de la tèrre (Born between the thighs of the land), has its roots in a particular vision and analysis of the society of southern Italy – the place where Ezio Schiavulli was born, and which he revisits via dance. The group chose Schiavulli having been impressed by his “strength and authenticity as well as his explosiveness”. Originally choreographed for 4 dancers and 8 live musicians, the piece has been adapted for 9 dancers by Schiavulli himself. Dancer Gabriele Montaruli, a member of Schiavulli’s company Ez3, who performed in the piece, taught the work to the group.
Amateur Dance and Repertory is a companion program to amateur practice beyond the dance class and the technical learning phase. Intended for groups of amateur dancers, it opens a space of sharing for those who wish to deepen a practice and a knowledge of the dance in relation to its history.
