What is the sense of the existence of beauty? How can the idea of grace be made apparent? In a place without a frame, the dancers of Meditation on beauty move in a space of parallelepipeds and translate into gesture that need for beauty which is a vital condition. Every passage responds to the aesthetics of a choreographic act that is set outside the idea of making a show in order to become a sign of existence, an action to regain space for the body. Made up of the complementary fragments of one single reflection, Meditation on Beauty is born from a fascination for geometric shapes, as a form to measure space and as the basic essence of difficult exercises in balance, tense movements and poses that require total confidence in the body, in the stability of the other. The feminine, traced in gestures and gracefulness, is the fulcrum of the whole work: the referential figures are women, and particularly feminine are the different arts of Nina Simone and Maya Deren. Space and time are the Cartesian axes of dance, the body marking the rhythm, considered from a feminine viewpoint of constant all-round change, fragility and strength, of positions taken or allowed to slip past. Meditation on Beauty is a metaphor of the world continuously seeking a precarious yet stable balance, a necessary mutation accompanied by constant questioning of one’s own position, which thus becomes the place of investigation and indeed meditation on the existence and identity of woman, of a ballerina, a person, the very idea of the feminine, fragile and powerful, on the relation with what is beautiful, on the need for gracefulness, on the search for equilibrium.
