Ma déesse SDF (1993)
In 1993, Andy De Groat conceived for Kalpana the solo Ma déesse SDF, in the spirit of their collaboration on La Bayadère, with music by Conlon Nancarrow and the texts “Chansons” by Christopher Knowles read by Arby Ovanessian (recorded in Chiraz-Iran in 1975). Awarded the “Muse et qualité Award” by Andy in 1997, Kalpana also took part in La Folie d’Igitur in 2009.
Extract of programme
« The starting point: the structure and duration of a classical recital, narrowed down to its fifth.
A character – a witch perhaps.
In any case, someone without a fixed abode.
A ceremony.
She prepares to…
dance.
To “embody”.
No Indian music.
Other rhythms had to be found.
Other resonances.
Similar to our collaboration on “La Bayadère”.
An encounter with tradition.
To repeat, to contradict, to dance. »
Andy Degroat, September 1994
