L'Ange
“In our collective imagination, angels are pure and good. This idea both attracts and annoys me. Like sticky paper. Like some fixed idea. […]It’s not a matter of portraying different angels or creating characters with a particular personality, but bringing all these aspects together into one being. All these things are part of us, whether we either see them vaguely or pay them a lot of attention. I wanted to get away from these conventions of representing angels and suggest others. How do you give a spiritual being a body, and what kind of body at that?I chose two “eye witness accounts”…That of St Thomas Aquinas, for whom angels cannot be represented in human form or they will become corruptible…And that of St Teresa of Avila who, during her ecstasy, describes for us her vision of an angel in a way that could not be more carnal…”
