Lasciatemi morire!E chi volete voi che mi conforteIn così dura sorte,In così gran martire?Lasciatemi morire
All that remains of Monteverdi’s Arianna is its central scene, Lamento. Abandoned by Theseus, Arianne mourns the part of herself that has been torn away for ever. Michèle Anne De Mey has been inspired by this exquisite, ancient and tragic snippet to create a solo that has been tailor-made for Gabriella Iacono, her prima donna. Initially the choreographer confines herself to a strict, choreographed transposition of the text carried by the singing. Then the tableaux link together into a dance that transforms the first throes of a sense of abandonment through a veritable anatomy of dereliction, a kind of universal écorché of the mindset of someone wounded by the loss of a beloved.
