Je suis un autre
Duet performed by Caroline Gravel and Dany Desjardins
“My life has a slight after-taste of confusion. I am not what I present to the world. What I want to say has nothing in common with what comes out of my mouth. I keep an eye on my comments, I hold back my actions, I do not spontaneously launch myself onto the object of my desire and my body does not just dissolve when I fail at something. I contain myself. I stay upright. Smiling. Social. I have my pride. But underneath, I am ambiguous and in flux, I am everything and its opposite. I am plant, animal, a substance in the making. Je suis un autre (I am an other). ’Je suis un autre’ (I am an other) was built on the contradictions between what we believe we are or want to be, and our instincts. The sudden diversion of a look, a slight blush on the skin, a sweating or trembling hand… These physical distortions reveal internal distortions and show the traces of discrepancy between the image we have of ourselves – conditioned and domesticated – and our deepest urges. ‘Je suis un autre’ was born out of the sensation of imprisonment created by convention, and seeks to update the multiplicity and ambiguity of the beings that hide under its veneer.”
