Grand Ecart - A propos de la danse contemporaine

Year of production
2000

Charles Picq pays a fabulous tribute to all contemporary expressions of the French choreographic scene.

Director Charles Picq meets with the major figures of contemporary French choreography and questions representatives of the most diverse movements about their own artistic journeys. Rejecting no sensibility and eager to paint a faithful picture of the plurality of approaches that have developed and mutually influenced each other, Charles Picq gives voice to the actors who have taken part in this remarkable choreographic adventure. Key figures of the Nouvelle Danse Française, such as Maguy Marin, Jean-Claude Gallotta, Karine Saporta, Joëlle Bouvier, and Régis Obadia, along with the inimitable figures of Françoise Dupuy and Mathilde Monnier, all deliver a gripping testimony on the evolution of practices and tastes over the years of their activity.

Masterfully directed, Charles Picq’s documentary manages to provide an overview of French contemporary dance in its singularity: a film without stars, without hierarchy, and perhaps even without chronology.
