Creation 2021 for 4 dancers

Intent

FutureNow refocuses attention on questions and themes that are fundamental to everyone’s lives: childhood, the roots of subjectivity, construction of the self, and creativity.

The choreographer set out by asking his performers a few simple, tangible questions: “How was I creative as a child? When did I feel different, as a young person?” In this way, he invites his dancers to delve into their memories and identify a key turning point, to rediscover one of these reference points, or intimate foundations, that form the crux of their subjectivity, their own specific way of seeing, understanding and experiencing the world. If we ask ourselves these questions, we will all recall a moment in our childhood, brief or long, a life experience, initiative, refusal, a new way of talking, a thought, when our “I” took a new turn, a new direction, and gained new momentum.

It’s a matter of creating distance: from ourselves, our relationship to others, our habits. In the space between, something new is born, which we will grasp either on the spot or after the fact. This is what FutureNow seeks to explore and make visible.

Each of the dancers answered the choreographer’s question by creating a solo consisting of words (which narrate the key event in their life story) and movements. Yuval Pick now uses this wealth of material to envision his piece as a decoupage, a montage of fragments, or a mosaic reflecting this creative subjectivity, and furthermore the creativity engendered by forging new connections with others.

For FutureNow, Yuval Pick decided to adopt the almost cinematic process of cutting and reassembling material. Much like a documentary, his method attempts to render visible forms and emotions, letting them flow as much as possible.
The goal of FutureNow is to generate a feeling of creative freedom in the audience’s bodies and senses!
