The Indian Ocean – formerly known as the Eastern Ocean or the Indian Sea – covers 75 million km², or almost 21% of the Earth’s surface. Located 9,200 km from mainland France, 800 km from Madagascar and almost 3,000 km from South Africa, Réunion is surrounded by sister islands such as Mauritius (231 km away) and Rodrigues (837 km away).
The dancers and musicians who perform here are ‘ultra-marins’, bearers of a mixed and shifting identity.
