Cordes
This work invites two artistic skills, music and dance, to resonate on the same wavelength like the“Strings” of the title, for each to feed on the other’s singularity, to blend musicality with gesture around the notion of tension.
This work invites two artistic skills, music and dance, to resonate on the same wavelength like the “Strings” of the title, for each to feed on the other’s singularity, to blend musicality with gesture around the notion of tension. The tension of strings, the tautness of bodies and relationships. The performing artists lead us into an extreme intertwining of variations in volume, with the forcefulness and beauty of the musical works chosen for the performance: the generously-rich texture of Stravinsky’s Concerto in D, the power and intimacy of Ysaÿe’s Solo Violin Sonata, and the dramatic tension of l’Eloignement by Qigang Chen.
Sylvain Groud calls on dancers and musicians to convert the codes to other uses, to open doors that were thought to be locked, sharing their territories and the fields of their respective imaginations. Between bodies and strings – punning on corps and cordes – the intimate relationships of score with bow, or of word with gesture, are brought to the fore in a generously-spirited, committed dance.
