Chant VI
“Chant VI” is a choreography of this crossing. The voice of the reciter unveils extracts from the work of the “Aeneid”. The murmur of the words accompanies the dancers step-by-step.
CHANT VI / creation 2008
Choreography Sophie Tabakov
In “Book VI” of Virgil’s “Aeneid”, Aeneas descends into the underworld to question his father, Anchises. Guided by twin doves and the Sibyl, the prophetess, he accomplishes a journey out of time, in “a twilight zone”. “Chant VI” is a choreography of this crossing. The voice of the reciter unveils extracts from the work of the “Aeneid”. The murmur of the words accompanies the dancers step-by-step. Video images are projected on a screen like intangible evidence, linked to the text and the choreography. Chant VI is also a tale of crossing over between the past, the present and the future, in other words, how to accept the legacy of an ancestor, symbolized by a heavy, woollen cloak.
