Black pearls
“Black Pearls” brings together four ensembles from different regions of the Carpathian basin to perform Gypsy music and dance.
“Black Pearls” brings together four ensembles from different regions of the Carpathian basin to perform Gypsy music and dance. Antal Szalai and his Gypsy Band are internationally renowned as exponents of this particular musical culture developed by Hungarian and Romanian Gypsy musicians in the nineteenth century. The group’s dancers catch us up into the elation and energy of their wild folk dances. In the round or facing each other, they launch themselves into complex leaping steps, snapping their fingers or energetically beating their chests, slapping their thighs and calves. They twirl, amuse, tease and seduce each other and show us the joy to be had in dancing together.
