Léa Tirabasso
Léa was born in Moyeuvre Grande (FR), a gloomy and sulky city from Grand Est, close to the very famous Florange and its huge factories.
She studied Modern Littérature and History of Art in Lyon, with a Contemporary Art option and a strong interest in Fluxus and its idea of a porous frontier between life and art.
In parallel to her study, she worked at the Contemporary Art Institute of Villeurbanne and independently trained as a dancer.
In 2008, she joins the London Contemporary Dance School for a year and graduates with a Certificate of Higher Education. As a dancer, she worked with Johannes Wieland, Stephanie Thiersch, Michael Langeneckert (DE), Liquid Loft / Chris Haring (AT) José Vidal (CL), Clod Ensemble (UK) and Bernard Baumgarten (LU) amongst others.
Since 2012, she has been making her own work. Her previous pieces include XX – a further study (2012), Simones (2013, made with the dancers from the Staatstheater Kassel). Her first funded piece (the real deal) was love me tender (2015, tour in Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain, United Kingdom), she then created TOYS (2017, tour in Luxembourg, United Kingdom, South Korea) and The Ephemeral life of an octopus (2019), piece which is part of the 2020 Aerowaves Selection.
For all these pieces, Léa starts with a philosophical impulse, and collaborates with Thomas Stern, a Philosophy Professor at University College London.
In 2016 she was awarded with the prestigious Arts and Literature Prize from Institut Grand Ducal, Luxembourg.
It is with the Octopus between 2017 and 2019 that Léa starts a tight collaboration between Science and Dance. The piece deals with the evolution of cancer cells and the lived experience of illness, she got to collaborate with Geneticians, Oncologists, Surgeons and General Practitioners. She is since, often invited to talk about the links between Art and Science to medical students, and to share her experience as an artist and a patient during international conferences (CH, LU).
Physically, Léa is interested in the notions of tension, brutality and dysfunction.
She works with different corporeal technique like Clown or Animal Transformation to feed her choreographic research.
She works in Luxembourg and in London.
