Originally from Bahia, Brazil, Augusto Soledade began his dance training at the Federal University of Bahia, where he was part of a program with a strong emphasis on modern dance. He trained with renowned artists Garth Fagan and Clyde Morgan. In addition to his dance studies, he holds a degree in journalism from the Federal University of Bahia. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Dance from SUNY Brockport in 1998. That same year, he received the Pylyshenko-Strasser Graduate Dance Award and was a finalist in the dance category for the 1998 Thayer Fellowship.

Over the years, he has been awarded numerous grants and honors, including the Florida Individual Artist Grant, the Artist Access Grant, the Artist Enhancement Grant, and the International Cultural Exchange Grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

In 2005, he was awarded both the Miami Dade Choreographer’s Fellowship (for the first time) and the Creative Capital Professional Development Workshop Award.

In 2008, he received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography. In 2010, he earned the Dance Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship for the third time. In August 2011, he was nominated for the Zelda Fichandler Award and was awarded both the Creation Fund Grant and the Forth Fund Grant by the National Performance Network (NPN).

In 2012, Augusto Soledade won the Knight Arts Challenge Grant to support the Miami Dance Mecca Project, an initiative launched by Augusto Soledade Brazzdance to elevate Miami’s profile as a rising hub for contemporary dance. That same year, he received the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs for the second consecutive time.

In 2016, he was awarded the Miami Dade Choreographer’s Fellowship for the seventh time. In the fall of 2018, he was nominated for the USA Artist Fellowship.

Augusto Soledade is the founding Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Augusto Soledade Brazzdance, based in Miami.
