Paulo Ribeiro
Born in Lisbon, Paulo Ribeiro pursued a career as a dancer in dance companies in Belgium and France before asserting himself as a choreographer. He signed his first show in 1984 in Paris with the Stridanse company that he co-founded. On his return to Portugal in 1988, he collaborated with the Lisbon Dance Company and with the Ballet Gulbenkian for which he created a number of works. His career took off internationally as from 1991, thanks to the creation of works for reputed companies: the Nederlands Dans Theater II, the Centre Chorégraphique de Nevers, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Ballet de Lorraine. In 1995, he founded the Paulo Ribeiro company for which he had already created twenty original works including his solo Sem um tu não pode haver um eu, presented at Chaillot in 2015. In 1998 he was named director of the Teatro Viriato in Viseu, Portugal. He has received a number of national and international awards including the Best choreography Award 2010 by the Portuguese Society of Authors with Paisagens – onde o negro é cor. Alongside his work as company author, Paulo Ribeiro also devotes himself to the commission of choreographic events, to coaching and to teaching, in particular at the Conservatoire National de Danse.
