Birth of a project

In 2008, Abou Lagraa returns in Algeria to find its roots, its past and decides to put a lot there artistically. This return becomes a reality in 2009, while it sees confiding by Mrs Khalida Toumi, Algerian Minister of Culture, the choreography of Closing ceremony of the 2nd Pan-African Festival of Algiers which takes place in July, 2009. The Company La Baraka is afterward commissioned to develop the art of the dance in Algeria.

Carried by Abou Lagraa and Nawal Aït-Benalla-Lagraa/Company La Baraka, introduced by the Algerian Ministry of Culture, supported by the Algerian Agency for the Cultural Brilliance, the project of the Mediterranean cultural Bridge is conceived in 2010 as a three-year program of algéro-French cooperation in favour of the choreographic art. The main objectives being to create a Ballet of contemporary dance structured around two inseparable poles that are the formation and the creation, to encourage the exchanges of choreographic works, to support the professionalization of the Algerian dancers… The initiative leans above all on the formation (ballet, contemporary dance, yoga) with an educational program managed by Nawal Lagraa and who implies the dancers of the Company La Baraka.

In January, 2010, a national audition) gathered in Algeria about 400 candidate, stemming from all the regions, to select 9 dancers. It is these young Algerian talents which constitute the Ballet Contemporain d’Alger today and which interpret Nya.

The educational and artistic success of the project ends, since September, 2010, in several national and international tours. In July, 2011, Abou Lagraa receives Grand Prix of the Criticism for the best choreography attributed .

The documentary of Laurent Ait Banalla which redraws the birth of the project, the audition of 400 young people by Abou Lagraa and Nawal Lagraa, Aït Benalla-Lagraa, the selection of the dancers of the Contemporary Ballet of Algiers and the work around Nya.

Filmed by Arte, in January, 2011, to the Festival of Suresnes Cité Danse, the show Nya d’ Abou Lagraa, is proposed to you in its entirety. It is here the opportunity to see all the crossed(gone through) road by these young dancers who demonstrate of artistic high qualities.

An interview of Abou Lagraa explaining his vision of the project, the political and artistic sense which he gives him. He also evokes his hopes to see the contemporary dance recognized in Algeria quite as his desire to transmit, through the dance, a freedom and a future to these young Algerian dancers.

An interview of Nawal Aït Benalla-Lagraa, who carries all the formation of the Ballet approaches the educational project which she develops and her narrow link with the work of creation of Abou lagraa.

Two dancers of the Contemporary Ballet of Algiers speak. It is about Nassim Feddal and Mokhtar Boussouf, who sometimes shyly speak about this extraordinary adventure that they live for more than a year.

Whereas NYA pursues its international tour, two other creations are in progress with the dancers of the Company La Baraka and those of the Ballet Contemporain d’Alger: Univers… l’Afrique (in May, 2012) and EL-Djoudour (the roots), (in January, 2013).
