Jean-Charles Mbotti Malolo
Born in 1984 in Villeurbanne, Jean-Charles followed the course of the Emile Cohl school in the author’s film section and graduated in 2007 with the congratulations of the jury. His graduation film “The Heart is a Metronome” received the “Best First Film Award” at the Hiroshima Festival in 2008.
Drawing is his first passion, but dance has always been part of his mode of expression. He joined the Stylistik Company in 2008.
In June 2012 Jean-Charles trained in sign language to write and produce “Le Sens du Toucher”, under the friendly gaze of Emmanuelle Laborit. This second short film, combining dance aesthetics and sign language, received more than twenty international awards, among more than sixty official festival selections.
“Les Mots”, Jean-Charles’s first choreographic show – a solo for two performers – was launched at the start of 2017. It follows on from the work around non-verbal communication.
His latest film, “Make it Soul”, is based on the graphics by Simon Roussin. Its ambition is to pay homage to the essence of black American music, bringing Solomon Burke and James Brown back to life. “Make it Soul” is nominated for the César for Best Animated Short Film 2020.
