« The Kinkaleri collective consists of three artists from different background, from dance to architecture, who produce shows, installations, performances, videos and sound environments, as well as other projects, which always differ from the ‘usual’ format and are situated on the edges of different practices and pre-defined categories. Its work also puts versatility hand-in-hand with the collective dimension, which is one of the principal characteristics of the group: six individuals whose roles are not divided in a traditional way (director, set designer, actor, etc.). This collective method is an antidote to any authoritarian or hierarchical leanings within the group; in particular, the will to power of the director is set aside in favour of collective work. The inevitable tension between the view of the individual and that of the collective is transformed into a real creative strength with multiple entry points. The Kinkaleri approach is based on a diversion, or hijacking, or performative action. Their productions are ‘anti-spectacular’. They call into question the crisis of stage presentation and its reception, or consumption. Each project is a piece of art, often preceded by a series of studies which represent the stages of work through which the project takes shape. If there were a Kinkaleri ‘style’, it might be called a ‘strict heterodoxy’; an attitude of negotiation or dynamic transition between one format and another, which is at the heart of the group’s formal research. » Giovanna Zapperi
