Changmu Dance Company
Artistic direction: Kim MaeJa
Creation: 1976
Kim MaeJa is a key and emblematic figure in Korean dance, both as a choreographer and as an art historian. Since 1976, when she founded the company ChangMu (meaning “creating dance”), in her shows she has encouraged experimentation, between tradition and modernity, incorporating, in modern choreography, older forms such as court dances, traditional dances and ritual shaman and Buddhist dances. The fluidity and slowness of the dances, the sophistication of the sets and costumes, the power of the voices plunge the spectator into a dream-like, beautiful world. Shadow and light, sacrifice and rebirth, a spiritual and poetic experience.
