MAGALI POBEL ET PIERRE-JOHANN SUC

Following their studies in the Centre national de danse contemporaine (CNDC – National Centre for Contemporary Dance) in Angers from 1996 to 1998, Magali Pobel and Pierre-Johann Suc created Androphyne in 1998, a company they established in the Landes region of France.

Insatiable, dabbling in everything, they are rarely where you would expect them to be. Acknowledged as multidisciplinary, their creations should be considered, first and foremost, as simple “live performances”. Interstices touched endlessly, where only the corporal sincerity of the actors engaged in the process is important. As such, their approach reflects their practice: multiple and fun-filled. From the significance of a glance to questioning the limits of a body… they never know where the experience will begin and how far it will take them. A utopian quest for mobility which will always move somewhere else, just like a child, wanting to feel yet again this mischievous delight: of playing.

In August 1998, they created “Le Marchand de silence” trio. In1999, their encounter with Manuel Sorto, a Salvadoran filmmaker and figure of theatre, would lead to placing image at the heart of their work. In 2000, their “Les Oubliés” duo, backed by the National Choreography Centre of Biarritz – Thierry Malandain, was presented at Le Temps d’Aimer Festival of Biarritz. In 2002, the choreographers imagined a high point for the burgeoning choreographic creation with the support of the Landes Department and worked hand-in-hand with the Le Parnasse Theatre of Mimizan to organize Les Mouvementées Festival (from 2004 to 2010).

In 2003, the company invited the choreographer Jacques Patarozzi to perform the role of a guide of the hereafter (in a video clip) in their work “Il faisait trop beau” (The weather was too good). In 2005, they called upon the musician from Toulouse, Eddy Crampes; for their work “Pas à pas jusqu’au dernier”, which was performed for the first time at the CDC in Toulouse.

In 2006, Androphyne was the company in residence at the National Choreography Centre (CCN) – Josef Nadj in Orléans for the creation of “Le spectacle dont vous êtes le héros” (The show where you are the hero), a production for eight performers; then between 2008 and 2010, the company took on a companionship-residence with Le Parnasse in Mimizan where it presented “Faites demi-tour dès que possible” in 2009.

Androphyne was associate company with the Cuvier in Artigues-près-Bordeaux – CDC of Aquitaine (2011-2013) and, in 2011-2012, benefited from the support of all the Choreographic Development Centres for the project “[…] OU PAS” (OR NOT).
