In 1985, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo Company was founded thanks to HRH the Princess of Hanover who wished to perpetuate the long tradition of dance in Monaco and its famous Ballets Russes. After the first artistic directors Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Lacotte, followed by Jean-Yves Esquerre, the appointment of Jean-Christophe Maillot in 1993 brought the company renewal and international renown thanks to his choreographies, acclaimed the world over. Jean-Christophe Maillot further enriched the repertoire by inviting international choreographers given the opportunity to work with this exceptional group of 50 dancers. In 2000, he founded the Monaco Dance Forum, an international ballet festival in which the company participates regularly. In 2011, under the Presidency of HRH the Princess of Hanover, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo directed by Jean-Christophe Maillot brought together three institutions: Les Ballets de Monte Carlo Company, the Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Dance Academy. Creation, dissemination and training are presently combined within a single structure in Monaco to serve ballet in a completely novel way in the world of dance.
