The company was founded in 1968 at the Maison de la Culture in Amiens under the name Ballet-Théâtre Contemporain by Jean-Albert Cartier and Françoise Adret. After a spell in Angers between 1972 and 1978, the company finally settled in Nancy in 1978.
The company was successively directed by Jean-Albert Cartier, Patrick Dupont, Pierre Lacotte, Françoise Adret, Didier Deschamps and Petter Jacobsson.

In January 2025, Maud Le Pladec took over as director of the CCN, a contemporary dance company with 24 permanent dancers. The artistic and cultural project put in place by Maud Le Pladec draws on the history of the BTC (Ballet Théâtre Contemporain) as well as different forms of artistic expression such as music, film and the visual arts.
It also consolidates the CCN’s presence in Nancy and the surrounding area, as well as in the Grand-Est region, for all audiences.
The company offers a varied repertoire, with creations by Marco da Silva Ferreira, Ayelen Parolin, Jan Martens, Mazelfreten and Princess Madoki. It also presents works from the repertoires of Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown and Twyla Tharp.
