The Ballet national de Marseille is a creation of our time, a place of emergence that has been charged with a very special aura since its inception. The fruit of an exception, this structure emancipated itself from the French centrality of the time. Roland Petit opens this narrative, whose various adventures and successes set out a history of dance. The intrinsic vivacity of the Ballet found in the direction of (LA)HORDE a regenerative form that once again stamped the identity of an ecstatic creative community.
In 1972, choreographer Roland Petit created Les Ballets de Marseille. Having lost its plural form, the Ballet National de Marseille became a Centre Chorégraphique National in 1984. The creation and dissemination of shows by the Ballet and guest artists are at the heart of its missions. Firmly rooted in its time, curious and open to the world, the BNM is also a landmark of Marseille’s architectural heritage, close to the Parc Borély.
Director of the CCN Ballet national de Marseille since 2019, (LA)HORDE has brought together artists Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel since 2013.
Through films and performances (Novaciéries, 2015; Cloud Chasers, 2016; The Master’s Tools, 2017; Cultes, 2019; Room With A View, 2020; Ghosts, 2021), choreographic pieces (Night Owl, 2016; To Da Bone, 2017 : Marry Me in Bassiani, 2019; Room With A View, 2020), (LA)HORDE questions the political scope of dance and maps out the choreographic forms of popular uprising, whether massive or isolated, from raves to traditional dances to jumpstyle.
Their exploration of the new dynamics of circulation and representation of dance and the body that are developing online has led them to form the concept of ‘post-internet dance’. By diversifying its media, (LA) HORDE explores the almost infinite serendipity offered by this new territory and offers multiple perspectives on the revolts of these communities, with which the collective works in a heterarchical way.
In 2022, they present Roommates, a programme of six short pieces linking hyper-realism and minimalism by Lucinda Childs, Claude Brumachon and Benjamin Lamarche, Peeping Tom, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, (LA) HORDE, as well as a major dance exhibition, We Should Have Never Walked on the Moon, combining the register of the musical and the action film with that of the choreographic avant-garde.
Room With A View, starring Rone, was staged again at the Théâtre du Châtelet in September 2022 to resounding success, with magazine covers and an increasingly enthusiastic audience.
(LA) HORDE have also choreographed music videos and tours for Sam Smith (Grammys 2023) and Madonna (The Celebration Tour 2023).
