Numeridanse: The Leading Platform for Dance

Numeridanse is the first video platform entirely dedicated to dance. Free and open to all, it offers a unique collection of videos, including filmed performances, documentaries, interviews, as well as short and feature films.

All dance genres, styles, and forms are represented, providing a comprehensive overview of the richness and diversity of choreographic heritage.

To deepen the exploration and understanding of dance, Numeridanse features thematic dossiers and contextual resources. The platform is also a dynamic space where online events are regularly organized.

Our mission: to make an invaluable choreographic heritage accessible to as many people as possible.
Our ambition: to be an essential tool serving the world of dance—its artists, its audience, cultural professionals, and educators.

Through Numeridanse, dance is shared, transmitted, and experienced, at the crossroads of arts and eras.

Who are we?

A Theater

Since its creation in 2011, the platform has been managed and operated by the Maison de la Danse in Lyon.
As the first theater dedicated to dance when it opened its doors in 1980, the Maison de la Danse presents a program where different dance styles and aesthetics intersect and challenge each other. It welcomes major 20th-century choreographers, contemporary creators, and fosters a dialogue between new works and repertoire. Each season, the Maison de la Danse hosts between 30 and 40 dance companies, presenting approximately 200 performances. More than 150,000 spectators attend every season.

A National Institution

Numeridanse is also developed in collaboration with the media library team at the Centre National de la Danse (CN D). The performing arts and the world of documentation have joined forces to create a resource that serves dance professionals and their audiences—a living online database.

Partners

Numeridanse receives support from the French Ministry of Culture, the regional authorities of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and the BNP Paribas Foundation. Thanks to these committed partners, who advocate for universal access to culture and dance, Numeridanse remains free to access and completely ad-free.

Contributors

Artists, theaters, festivals, dance companies, institutions, National Choreographic Centers, and producers—all professionals in the performing arts—continuously enrich Numeridanse’s video archive by sharing their collections on the platform. They also engage with the various educational tools available on the site. This community actively contributes to the platform’s development and funding.

Developers

The beta version and the first two versions of Numeridanse were designed and developed by the Villeurbanne-based agency Webcastor. The third version of Numeridanse was created by the Lyon-based agency Ladydinde in 2018. Since 2022, the Lyon-based agency Les Animals has been responsible for ongoing maintenance and updates, including the new version launched in 2025.

How was Numeridanse born?

The Numeridanse project was conceived by writer, filmmaker, and videographer Charles Picq. A visionary artist, he recognized the importance of filming dance as early as the 1980s. He quickly became a close collaborator of the Maison de la Danse, the Biennale de la Danse, and numerous artists (Michel Kelemenis, Carolyn Carlson, Dominique Bagouet, Susanne Linke, Régine Chopinot, Andy Degroat…).

He soon realized the importance of preserving and sharing the video archives he was building and developed numerous tools for dissemination and education.

Numeridanse is the culmination of tools created at the Maison de la Danse and the result of Charles Picq’s extensive reflections on how best to use the power of the internet to make dance video archives accessible while respecting the works and the artists.

Charles Picq passed away in 2012. Since then, the Numeridanse team has carried on his vision with dedication, passion, and ambition.
