Education, le film work in progress
César Vayssié’s film is a portrayal and a construction-in-progress of Boris Charmatz’s in situ project, “Education”.
César Vayssié’s film is a portrayal and a construction-in-progress of Boris Charmatz’s in situ project, “Education” (November 2000, at the Parlement de Bretagne in Rennes). The visitor is invited to walk from room to room, around the choreographic installation, passing from the courtroom to function rooms. “Education” addresses the question of the educated body and the relationship between learning and authority. Without contrived dramaturgy or unifying choreographic writing, the installation was an inspiration for collages, cross-breeding of ideas, and superposition of materials in an experimental project. In his film, César Vayssié plays with these collages, eliciting seamless transformations, repetitions of scenes evoking the open-ended character of the work, the eternal work-in-progress that results from experimentation. The style of filming and editing the images respects this lack of finitude.
It is important to note that, as with any work of cinema, the conditions in which the object is viewed are essential to the appreciation of the work. Although the whole version is shown here, it is in small format, and should be viewed for research purposes only.
