The Montpellier Danse Festival is a major event in the choreographic arts, created in 1981 by Georges Frêche and Dominique Bagouet.
Every year, the festival welcomes the most important choreographers as well as young talents, and aims to showcase all types of dance to the many people who visit its venues: classical, contemporary and traditional. The big shows are matched by the most cutting-edge creations, enabling everyone to discover the full breadth and diversity of this art form. From October to March, the Montpellier Danse season offers dance performances all year round in a wide range of venues across the city. At the Agora, Cité Internationale de la Danse, a former 17th-century convent completed in 2010, Montpellier Danse welcomes artists in residence and invites the public to discover the art of choreography in a variety of ways: dance workshops, lectures, screenings, etc.
Directed by Jean-Paul Montanari from 1983 to 2024, who made the event a not-to-be-missed event, a new page in the history of Montpellier Danse will be written from 2025 onwards.
