Sello Pesa
Sello Pesa, chorégraphe sud-africain né dans le quartier de Diesploot dans le township de Soweto, explore les changements et les défis liés au fait de vivre dans un contexte africain en mutation.
Son parcours artistique a commencé par l’étude des danses traditionnelles africaines (il a travaillé avec le Soweto Dance Theatre de Jackie Mbuyisela Semela), puis s’est déplacé vers la danse contemporaine. En 1997, il reçoit une bourse d’étude et part en Angleterre pour étudier la chorégraphie et la danse contemporaine à la Northern Contemporary Dance School de Leeds à l’issue de quoi il crée « Scars » pour le Yorkshire Dance et « Scars II » pour l’ American Dance Festival (Caroline du Nord). En 1999, il fonde et dirige avec Moeketsi Koena l’Inzalo Dance Theatre jusqu’en 2002.
En 2001, « Same But Different » reçoit le premier prix de la biennale africaine contemporaine Sanga II – Rencontres chorégraphiques d’Afrique et de l’Océan Indien à Madagascar – cette pièce tournera en Europe et Afrique et sera invitée en 2004, à participer au Movement ®evolution In and Out of Africa aux Etats-Unis.
Pendant 4 ans, Sello Pesa collabore avec Valérie Berger, chorégraphe réunionnaise, et danse à l’étranger (Maurice, Seychelles, Madagascar, Réunion, Inde, Europe, Russie, Amérique et Afrique).
En 2006, le chorégraphe dirige le Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre avec Brian Ntembu, Humphrey Maleka, Sello Pesa, Vaugn Sadie. Ce collectif de danseurs conçoit et réalise des projets dont les concepts sont socio-politiques et s’engage aussi, dans une exploration de la diversité et de l’évolution des cultures Sud-Africaines et des pratiques culturelles au travers de la danse contemporaine. Il joue aussi un rôle très important dans le lancement du Development Programme, qui a pour but de professionnaliser de jeunes danseurs.
De 2008 à 2010, avec le chorégraphe bruxellois Carlos Pez, Sello Pesa monte un laboratoire de danse entre l’Afrique du Sud et l’Allemagne dans le cadre de Cross Currents, dispositif qui sera repris en 2011 entre Johannesburg et Le Cap. En 2009 et 2011, il est invité à enseigne la danse contemporaine et la danse africaine à la Tanzfabrik de Berlin. Figure emblématique de la création chorégraphique, il représente l’Afrique du Sud au laboratoire chorégraphique qui se tient lors de la Biennale d’ArrakalarI.
En 2010, avec « In House Project », Sello Pesa place la danse dans les espaces publiques de Johannesburg et des villes environnantes et satisfait son aspiration à « rendre la danse et l’art accessible ». La rue, la ville, sont ses lieux de prédilection, d’où une manière singulière de questionner la pratique artistique et ses définitions. Son approche alternative des performances et des espaces l’a amené à collaborer avec des artistes et performeurs aux pratiques multiples tels que Peter van Heerden pour la création du controversé « Time of the small berries » en 2010. Sello Pesa prend plaisir à explorer de nouveaux moyens de travailler et de repousser les limites.
Reconnu internationalement, son travail se focalise actuellement sur le développement de projets contextuels en dialogue avec leur environnement et sur la création d’installations aux prises avec le vivant, entre performatif et quotidien. En 2013 Il présente « Lime Light on Rites » au Théâtre Pôle Sud et le Maillon de Strasbourg dans le cadre de Ville[s] en Jeu[x], une pièce qui « explore la manière dont les médias, via le marketing et la publicité, exploitent les émotions des gens » (programme du Théâtre Pôle Sud pour « Lime Light on Rites », 16-17 octobre 2013, www.pole-sud.fr).
